The 2030 agenda for sustainable development are the new milestones in the process of inclusive development; The SDGs include persons with disabilities thus opening doors for their active participation and recognition as contributor’smembers of the society. SDG4 seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learningopportunities for all, Equality of access to all levels of education for person with disabilities and inclusive, accessiblelearning environment for all.
It is the primary responsibility of the national government as a duty bearer to ensure that children have access to qualityeducation without discrimination and on the basis of equal opportunity. The right to education is a human rightrecognized under Kenya constitution and other international human rights instruments such as the UN convention of therights of children (CRC) Article 28 and 29 and the UN convention of persons with disabilities (CRPD) Article 24 and 32.
It’s presently estimated that 65 million primary and secondary school aged children in developing countries have adisabilities of whom a half are out of schools.
Over the past years the Liliane fonds in collaborations with its strategic partners (Cheshire disability services kenya ) haveheld an annual event (Ring a bell) campaign to raise awareness on issues touching on disabilities, the even is heldannually in the month of march, for the year 2018, the event is scheduled on the 21st March 2018,
Objectives of the campaign.
The Campaign has the following objectives:
• We Ring The Bell' campaign is aimed at drawing attention on the right to education for children with disabilitieswho are not able or not allowed to go to school many of whom are hidden in homes from fear of discrimination andstigmatization from the public.
• To promote inclusive Education in the Regular Schools.
• Through speeches from successful role models living with disabilities the Campaign was to encourage
• Involve the duty bearers and the media on awareness creation on we” Ring a Bell Campaign” on inclusive Education.
To achieve this the implementing partners through their networks will crate platforms to engage the policy makers, localadministration, media, opinion leaders and community members to participate in this days event.
As part of the campaign, making as much Noise as possible for one minute in the schoolyards, using bells, drums toattract the attention of policy makers and others who are able to eliminate the barriers that prevent children withdisabilities to go to school.

This home was started to meet the needs of the elderly poor of the area. By the late 70’s they had begun to live in temporary shelters and unsanitary conditions in the Korogocho, Huruma, Grogon, Ngei and Ghetto surroundings. The first six rooms were erected in 1980 with the help of Helpage U. K. In 1986, another sixteen rooms were added with the assistance of Caritas, Austria. A staff house was also added. Research carried out elderly slum-dwellers in September 1986, revealed the need for a day care Centre.
The Irish Government sponsored the building of the Centre which was furnished with the help of Helpage Kenya and American Women’s Association.
A Number of other donors have assisted with the building of additional rooms, a sick-bay Dispensary etc. In 1994 a new Dining room – cum T.V. room was added and a chapel.
Kariobangi Cheshire Home,( Nyumba ya Wazee), is a Home and a permanent residence for 40 very elderly men and women and has a day care program for about 200 elderly from the neighboring slum areas. It is being cared for by Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa, from the start.
-To uplift the quality of life of elderly people in need, some with disability regardless of sex, race, colour or creed.
-An inclusive society where elderly people who are in need and some with disability are respected, assisted and empowered to cope with life's challenges and live a meaningful life.
- To help them spend their days or years with true human dignity and respect.
- To give dedicated care and medical assistance where necessary within an atmosphere of love, peace and respect.
- To promote harmony and happiness among the elderly as they share their lives together.
- To provide for spiritual needs of individuals with due respect for their faith.
The world oldest student, Mr. Kimani Maruge was our resident at Kariobangi Cheshire Home.
He rested at age 90 years in the year 2009
Child Empowerment Programme
CDSK implements Child Empowerment Programme [CEP] in partnership with Liliane Fonds [ Netherlands] towards the realization of inclusive education. This is done through a network of local Partner Organisations (POs).In the CEP CDSK has a total of 3,890 (0-25years of age) direct beneficiaries in 46 Counties in Kenya. Child Empowerment Programme (CEP) entails addressing the impairments of children living with disability to functional state and removing the barriers (social, communicative, attitudinal, physical, policy) in the environment to enable them realize their rights and have equal opportunities in life. It is anchored on three pillars namely:-
• International Classification of Functioning, Health and Disability
• United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC) and United Nations Convention of the Right for Persons with Disability (UNCRPD)
• Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
