BREAKING THE SILENCE


Breaking the silence is a documentary put together by the Kajiado Young Voices group.

This group joined a campaigning forum advocating for inclusive education for those with hearing impairment. Consequently, children with hearing impairment in Kajiado are now able to access primary education at Bissel Primary School. This received media coverage on Kiss TV, KBC and Citizen TV.

 

Medals and More

David Ogogo of Nyanza Young voices group was part of the Kenya Paralympics team that participated in the World Deaf Athletics Championships in Toronto Canada in July 2012. David who has a hearing impairment won Gold medal during the championship. The Kenya Deaf Athletics was for the first time hosted by the former President of the republic of Kenya, Hon. Mwai Kibaki at the State House together with the former Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Honorable Paul Otuoma and other top government officials, where the president reaffirmed the governments commitment to youth empowerment and support through sports. In total, the team won eleven (11) medals (six gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals). The Kenyan team emerged top in the intercontinental ranking in Africa.

 

2000 Reasons to smile and more.

Nyanza Young Voices group through campaigns on the implementation of the UNCRPD got the deputy District Gender and Social Development Officer agree to assist persons with severe disabilities. Now 20 persons with severe disabilities in Kisumu East Sub-County receive Kshs 2000 (Two Thousands Kenya Shillings) per month. More over as a result of advocacy activities, two of our Young Voices members (Nyanza GRP have been employed in by the the  County Government of Kisumu.

 

Disability friendly footpaths along the Super Highway.

Nairobi Young voices group had a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Roads in an effort to ensure that safety measures especially along the New Super Highway ( Thika Road) is considered and implemented. The outcome  of the meeting was successful and these safety measures have now  been implemented for example the construction of disability friendly footpath along Thika Road Super Highway.

 

New Housing Bill in Kenya to accommodate persons with Disabilities.

 Nairobi Young Voices group attended a conference organized by the Kenya members of Parliament on the review of the New Housing bill. Through their advocacy work, a decision was made that all buildings in Kenya will be put up in a way that is accessible to Persons with Disabilities.
